recently my 99 F-350 crew cab 7.3 has had an intermittent problem put trans in drive or second doesn't move . in reverse or low moves normally next time i try drives like it always did .shifts normal too . try the next day same problem. truck has 200k on it. fluid is clean and smells normal. also when it is not working engine changes speed when engage shift into drive or second but no movement except low or reverse. any advice ? i was going to have trans flushed but garge suggested looking for electrical problem first not wasting new fluid if pan will need dropped
I don't think anything external to the trans can cause this unfortunately. There are feed bolts under the valve body which tend to loosen and can cause this. If not that you could have a bad seal which would mean rebuild time.
Don't waste money on new fluid. That won't fix it. Either will anything electrical. There is an internal problem. It could be as simple as loose feed bolts, or it could need a rebuild.
Assuming it a four by four, then I had a similar problem with my 99 F25o which turned out to be the transfer case actually.
I was told that there was a problem with the shift fork on that vintage NV transfer case (I believe it that make) riding out of position against something ultimately causing its failure.
Bought a rebuilt for a grand, 300$ install. Too heavy for my taste.
Same thing, tranny oil looked great, no smells etc but wouldn't move.
thanks for all the replies !
just one question truck has been fine all this week ! does the diagnosis stay the same ? I don't want to run it if chance of more damage but when i tried it this week it ran normally ?
