Would a 1956 272 HD motor bolt up to a 56 3-speed LD transmission without any modifications?

Many Y-Block parts are interchangeable so the short answer is yes.

What is it, exactly, that you are trying to do? Swapping from what, to what?

I currently have a 1963 292 hooked up to the 3 speed trans. I might be able to get the 56 272 heavy duty motor as a backup. Just wondering if it would bolt up.

Yes, that should be pretty easy. There might be small things like the front motor mount bracket that will have to be swapped or carb linkage but for the most part, it should bolt in easily.
