I was told that an 1979 F-250 I'm looking at came from the factory with a special order 429. I never heard of that, any of you hear of this special 429 option for 1979?

No, the 429 was never offered in any 73-79 F100-350, special order or otherwise, in either 2 or 4 WD.
The 460 was offered in 2WD only.
Look at the fourth character of the VIN, that will tell you what engine the truck came with originally. If it's a "J" the truck originally had a 460.
Assume everything the seller says is either exaggerated or an outright lie. It may seem callused to say that, but it'll keep you on your toes when dealing with people.
I have a guy telling me a 1979 4X4 came with a 429 SPO and all I ever heard of was 351M or 400M. He says he has the paperwork and I said please show me. I also had never ever heard of that engine in a F series.
351M. No such animal as a 400M. It's just a 400. (as long as we're splitting hairs) No 429 made it to any truck. If that's true, it's a one of one on the planet. I have no doubt there could be a 429 in the truck, but the factory didn't put it there.

He won't produce it, no matter what he says.
If by some miracle he produces paperwork, I will bet a weeks pay that, at best, it's going to be paperwork from a dealer, not the factory.
It's always possible at some point in the past a dealer installed it but it's not factory, especially being 4WD.
Go by only what the VIN says. That's how it left the factory, PERIOD!
Actually that blanket statement isn't correct. In my first answer, I went back and reworded it because I said pretty much the same thing.
Ford actually did put a 429 in trucks but it was the 600 and up series not the F100-350.
Like you said, as long as we're splitting hairs .
Thanks for confirming what I thought from that era. I was 99.99% sure the person didn't have a clue on what they were talking about. Before I call to their attention on a mistake, I make 100% certain. I stand corrected on the 400. I will give an update on what the person provides for info.

Yeah, I'd be interested in what he has for proof. If you can, get a look at the VIN, then you tell the owner what the truck originally came with.
On the 351M-400, that's a real common mistake. The reason Ford did that was to differentiate between the three different 351s they made. The 351 W (Windsor), the 351C (Cleveland) and the 351 M (modified) There was no reason to call the 400 a modified because the 400 was a one and only, no other 400s to confuse them with.

My son was looking at this truck really hard in KY and I told him to slow down and starting asking for proof with his questions. The guy had all the parts, but the engine had not been touched, axles sent out for complete professional rebuild, all the rusted metal was replaced and the original special order 429 had never been touched. Actually the truck, what was there looked pretty decent. As soon as the kid started asking for proof, the guy shut him right off and he has not heard from him. Would not even provide the VIN. Lesson learned for junior, slow down and don't always believe what you hear, verify it! So this is closed!
