ESOF Conversion

Hello everyone,
I am new to this posting thing so bare with me.

I have a 2001 F250 that has an ESOF problem. I bought the truck with this problem so I don't really have a lot of background information about it. I have taken it to my local Ford repair shop twice and they didn't really help other than to say they thought it's an electrical problem. My plan was to just scrap the ESOF and put in manual shifting linkage so I don't have to worry about it anymore. So here is my question. I have a friend who swears I don't have to switch transfer cases. He says you can just buy the manual linkage, take off the electric shifting motor, and plug-and-play. Any thoughts? Is there anyone who has actually done this??
Thanks!!

Try to use the search feature over in the top right when your looking at thread topics.
Type in ESOF and start clicking and reading.

I have not had trouble yet but have read on it some.
Does your 4x4 light come on the dash?
Can you hear the vacuum motor under the hood before starting the truck?
Does all your air only blow out the defrost vents??

It could just be a vacuum hose leak from pump to hubs.
Lots to check out but you can trouble shoot yourself after some reading

Well my 4WD light is always on even though I cannot get the truck to actually shift into 4WD. Something is goofy with my vacuum system but I don't know how that would affect the electrical motor not shifting it into 4WD. To my knowledge the vacuum system locks in the front hubs but that shouldn't have anything to do with the electric problem. Anyway I just wondered if there was anyone who knows if I actually need a new transfer case that has the manual linkage, or can I just buy the linkage and install it on my current transfer case.

Thanks

I think where Brad was going was that ESOF issues are common and can be fixed. Mine crapped out and I went with manual hubs and kept the push button 4X4 engagement, for example. IMO installing a manual lever is way more work that fixing what you have.

If you'd rather have a manual lever that's cool and I hope someone can confirm the xfer case is the same. I'm curious.

Welcome to FTE!

Transfer case is not the same and would need to be changed out. You need to verify if the vacuum is good on the hubs, the transfer case motor is shifting and the "lockouts" are functional. Lift the front end off the ground to verify the T-case is locking, then the auto hubs by turning each tire.

  1. Just because the stealership says it's electrical, that doesn't make it so. If it they really knew what the problem is, what was the holdup for fixing it?
  2. It's rarely electrical, that's why we ask what's going on.
  3. Even if it is electrical, we have you covered - if you don't mind doing a little troubleshooting on your own. The forum will walk you through it step-by-step - we have the experience and the schematics.
Say you go so far as to modify your transfer case, and you add a conglomeration of crap to the case - what if the problem is really mechanical? Your efforts would be wasted, and you would have boogered up the truck to where we may not be able to support you - or a shop may not be able to service it without charging you to return it to stock form.

You say the 4X4 light light is on. With the cab air set to vent, does the air come out the defroster? With the light on and shutting off the truck, can you spin the front driveline by hand?

Ok, That makes sense. So I just went out and looked at the truck and with all 4 wheels on the ground I cannot move the front drive line. I guess since the 4wd light is always on and I can't move the front drive line then the transfer case could be stuck in 4wd. Also, when I put the truck up on the lift and drive it then only the rear wheels drive. And none of this changes no matter what position you put the switch to. So perhaps the auto hubs have a problem? To answer your other question, no I do not get air out of the vents and I also do not hear the vacuum pump come on when I first turn on the key. Someone installed a BD exhaust brake and so they took off the stock vacuum pump and put on the aftermarket pump... Incidentally the exhaust brake doesn't work either. Perhaps I need to get the stock vacuum pump back?
Thank you so very much for your support!! I wish I had signed up for this much sooner!! It would have saved me a lot of time just to ask you folks.
