Here's a link to the EF-V8 thread I referred to:
EFV-8 Club Forum - 48-52 truck fender to cowl seal

I'm not sure why 48-50's would have a wider gap, but if they did, your reasoning would make sense. - Bob

Bob, the link isn't working. I've looked throughout the General Truck section and I think the thread is so old they've archived it. Thread numbers for the last year are in the 6,000 range, that one is 1,180.

I clicked the link and it came right up. Here is a photo of the seals I was referring to in the EFV8 posts. My truck was very original when I disassembled it so, I know for certain these seals were original to the truck. Is this the '48-'50 style seal Ross referred to ? My F4 was assembled in Kansas City. I did notice rereading those old posts on EFV8 forum, That I had mentioned a '49 F1 that I had sold that had remnants of the same type of seal as my truck. It was assembled in Memphis. These seals are almost identical to the cowl to fender seal used on the '42-'47 trucks, maybe some of the assembly plants were using up old stock.

The seal on the right is what I have, although it appears thicker all around. Hard to judge scale.

I just tried the link again and it came up. No pictures tho.

The right hand foam seal is from Dennis Carpenter. The exposed part of my original seal is about 9/16" wide.

Thanks for the pictures, they tell a lot. I think that link was to the archived thread - I found it by googling Mark's FTE username. The '52 F2 I sold, still had paint on the remnants of the seals. I can't remember if the originals on my F1 had paint or not, and the old pictures I have of it don't show enough detail. At this point, I'm not even sure if my originals were T shaped or H shaped. I'm curious about Mark's originals that are only 9/16's wide - were they installed with the wide side toward the cab, or toward the fender? - Bob

Bob, The wide side was toward the cowl. When I sanded the cab to paint it, there was a very small groove worn through the original paint from the edge of the seal rubbing the cowl.

This was not one of Henry's better designs. As you can see from the pictures below it traps dirt which then rubs through the paint as the fender moves against the body. But I tried fitting the fender without that seal and the gaps are not uniform top to bottom. At least this seal hides that and makes it look neat. It also protects against squeaks. The new seals that I bought have holes for the fender bolts which hold them in place. I saw no staples or evidence of staples on what was left of the body on my St. Paul built truck.

My fenders only bolt to the running board and filler in the rear. I don't know of any bolt in the rear except the one at the top that bolts to the inner fender.

I think that I got the seals from LMC truck. I can't find them right now. I put them away somewhere so I wouldn't lose them. The bolts are at the bottom of the fenders and across the extension piece to running board (see diagram). It appears that there is nothing at the top but my fenders fit tightly. I agree that there should be something at the top but not staples.

There are no bot\lts at the top. The top of the fender is held tight against the cowl by the inner panel to which the fender bolts.

I got to looking closer at those illustrations in the old Ford Parts Manuals, and you can see by looking closely at the upper ends of the "seals" that they have the "I" shape, rather than "H." That's true for both the 48-50 illustration, and the 51-52. The "H" replacements most of us have been using don't need the staples to hold them on, but originals that were "I" shaped did. I think mine had the staples, and I just slid the seals up from the bottom and left the old staples in place - need to go out to the shop and look underneath to make sure. At first, I thought the originals would've required separate, right and left part numbers if the angle at the bottom was molded in, but probably they would fit either side and you would bend them to fit above the fender extension - if they were in fact meant to be installed that way.

The PO apparently replaced the seals on my truck with the foam H type but didn't bother to remove the staples that had held the original seals in place.

He mounted them with the wider side inside and the narrow showing.

I checked underneath my fenders this evening and found that the original staples are still there (7 on each fender) and the lowest staple on each side is located below the upper edge of the fender extension. I guess that means the original seal went on down toward the running board, but I don't know if it then curved inward to fit between the fender and the front of the running board, or just ended at the bottom of the fender. - Bob
