Ok Guys, I am getting ready to install the inner fenders on my 1960. I bought basically every rubber part Dennis Carpenter sells for the truck. I have this stuff that Dennis Carpenter calls "fender welting". It is a roll of rubber about 2 inches wide. What do I do with this stuff as I reassemble?
I know we talked about how to do this tonite on the chat. You can stuff it in the gap with the fenders loose, like I said. It is just basically a gasket that takes rattles out.
But, I remembered another method. The welting has darts in the flange to let it bend around the fender contours. Sometimes, you have to trim the darts to allow room for the attach screws. I like to do that and dry fit the welting to the fender edge and get it to lay against the mounting flange just right. Then I put RTV silicone on the welting and the fange and lay it back on. Let it set up. Then put the fender on.
The next time you have to remove the fender, the welting stays with it and right where you want it. I've had my rear fenders off and on many times. I got tired of re-stuffing the welting. I finally screwed one up and tried the RTV.
In 1960 I don't welting was used on the front fenders - there is a rubber seal that attaches to the inner fender and forms against the cab. Welting might be used where the top of the fender meets the cab - it is only about 12 inches long.
John's f100 lists a front fender to cab pillar seal, but no picture is available
DC lists a Fender seal (b7c-16120) $3.00 for the pair
Mac's shows three different seals - Cowl to fender, fits top rear of front fender, Cowl to fender seal, between fender and cab and Fender to body pillar seal, rear of fender.
Wow - searched through the shop manual and found nothing, and then looked at the parts and accessories catalog (never looked in it before) and look at what I found!
I can see why George enjoys this so much - is sort of fun, and you do learn a lot. Maybe in 10 years I get as good on the 57 to 60 models as he is on the 53 to 56 ones!
Anyway, turns out Mac's was right - 3 rubber seals. Not sure if you can use the welting you bought without distorting your fender alignment, but if not the seals are not too bad in price. If the picture is not enough, just ask more questions!
Thanks for the help guys. I have a parts and assembly book and never would have thought to check there. However these parts are for the actual fender itself.
On the inner fender or inside of the front wheel well, is there anything that goes between the radiator support and the inner fender and what about between the cab and the inner fender. When I took it apart there was nothing, just metal to metal. I just want to make sure I don't have unneccessary raddles because I left out an elastomer.
I understand from Randy Jack that the welting does go between the inner fender and actual fender. I guess we could call it the horizontal flange between the two. That seems to make sence to me and it fits.
I think Randy was talking about an eariler truck - check the picture in your parts book. I cropped and erased some detail in the above picture, but the entire front clip is exposed on page 676 of the original Ford parts book. It does not show anything between the fender apron and the radiator support. Email me direct if you want a scanned image of that picture.
Hi. I see that this is an old chain...... could you send me a detailed picture of where the fender rubber goes? Putting together my 1960 F250 4x4.
Thanks Eric Wolff
