I believe the IAT sensor, also referred to as the Air Charge Temperature (ACT) sensor, is located in the MAF assembly on the 2001 Ranger 3.0L.

I just checked, and the 2001 Ford Manual Wiring Diagrams (Section 303-14B-00-001 Electronic Engine Controls) shows the IAT as part of the MAF assembly (gray wire, pin #6 at the harness connector). So, either the wiring diagrams are wrong, or the parts store that sold you the "replacement" IAT is wrong.

What trouble code did the scanner come back with?

Not necessarily. For example, there are times when the IAT sensor itself is OK, and the IAT code is instead due to a short or open in the IAT circuit:

1. gray wire, pin #6 (IAT input) to PCM pin #39

2. gray/red stripe wire, pin # 1 (IAT return) to PCM pin #92

This is why it is important to know exactly which IAT code(s) you are dealing with.

Also, there are times when people prefer to have an IAT sensor mounted separate from the MAF. In such cases, the IAT wires are cut at the MAF harness, and an IAT harness connector is spliced in, allowing for a stand-alone IAT sensor to be plugged in and relocated to another part of the air intake tube.
