2001 Ranger throwing random codes

I have a 2001 Ford Ranger 4.0L. The last few months I have had my check enegine light on and it was throwing the codes p0174 and p0171 Bank 1 and 2 are running lean.

I have been doing troublesoting over the last little while I changed the pvc valve, spark plug wires, spark plugs, fuel filter and most recently the mass airflow sensor. After I changed the sensor the light stayed off for a little while then turned back on this time with a totally diffrent code p0113.

Why would this be doing this after I changed the sensor is it not calibrated properly or have I solved one problem and created another?

Could someone please give me a little insight in to what could possibly be going on (I'm still learning how the sensor's work with each other)

Thanks!

P0113
Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Circuit High Input
Indidicates the sensor signal is greater than Self-Test maximum. The IAT sensor maximum is 4.6 Volts or -50C (-58F).
Possible Causes are:
Open circuit in harness
Sensor signal short to power
Damage sensor
Improper harness connection
Damaged PCM.

I would suspect the wiring first. Examine wiring harness for holes or burn spots.

worse case scenario is that the PCM is bad.

Welcome to FTE.

Seeing as how you like to turn wrenches on your ride, be sure to visit the "Tech Info" thread atop this form, for all kinds of good maintenance & repair info.

If you'll go there & scroll down to the emissions section, you'll find a link to a thread that'll generally describe what the various system sensors do. All apply to Rangers except the knock & fuel pressure sensors, which our system doesn't use.

On replacing the MAF sensor to fix the lean codes. The MAF sensor rarely goes bad.
It's problems are usually caused by it getting dirty, from things like using oiled foam, or cotton gauze air filters, improperly buttoned up or damaged air box, or air tube, improperly installed, or damaged air filter or seal, modified air intake system, wrong service grade or viscosity engine oil, ect, ect.

SO, if you think any of those things may apply, the new MAF sensor may get dirty too!!!!

As has been said, look to the IAT sensor & it's wiring, to find out why the computer is unhappy with it's PID, as this will cause fuel trim, mpg & maybe driveability probems.

Let us know what you find.
