Hey guys. I need to replace the rotors on my new to me X. What are you guys using and what has worked well for you? Is it worth going to a drilled and slotted rotor or should I just get the cheap ones from the local auto store.

Also, any tips and tricks on replacing them?

power stop drilled and slotted, seem to be working really well for me. with the extreme pads.

 

Good question. I do tow, but not daily. Around 5k pounds and probably averaging 3 times a month.

In my opinion the pads are most important... I only tow a couple times per year like you about 5k lbs. I use motorcraft rotors with ford brown box HD pads and have never had any issues. I had the green pads on for a little while and didn't care for them, but again that's just me. I did however replace all my brake lines last year and found that to really help. Just my .02

 

Thanks for the reply all, I will probably only do rotors right now as the pads look good. I think the previous owner had pads put on recently and decided not to do rotors since he was selling it. Pads look almost new.

Wow! I was just quoted $560.20 for 4 new motorcraft rotors from the local Ford dealer Think I will go with some aftermarket drilled and slotted ones.

I hear you on the pads though, I will go with some premimum pads when these wear out.

Looks like you might be right, I see they sell them all over the place and that was only 1 of many options. I guess I was suffering "shipping sticker shock" at first! I do appreciate the help and looking up the correct parts Mecdac.

 

Are your brakes "pulsating"? If not, why replace the rotors, just have them resurfaced since you have relatively new pads.

 

I"ve had really good service from my Raybestos New technology rotors. Paired with EBC pads, It works great.

 

Although not mentioned yet, it's frequently mentioned on FTE to stay away from DRILLED rotors since the removal of that material increases the heating which leads to warping of the rotors (reduces the mass/area to shed heat too).


Slotted are okay and many recommend the stock rotors as well.


Personally, I'm on the fence about what I'll be putting on next - but I will get stainless brake lines as mentioned by LivingLarge.

 

I am getting a slight bit of pulsation, but only if I am at highway speeds and tap the brakes very lightly. Otherwise, I don't feel any. I had it at a shop for inspection and they wouldn't let it pass with the current rotors.

I feel they were looking for an excuse to not do the work as they don't normally work on this big if a vehicle. I won't be going back to them.

I believe the rotors are good for quite a bit longer and had them on the to do list, but figured I might as well just knock them out now.

Interesting, so stay away from drilled rotors huh? That's the first I have heard that mentioned.
