I can't figure out what to do to get at the stock in dash speaker in my 78 F-250. It is seriously blown and I would like to replace it. I know this is a question but I have a speaker for it and if I knew how to fix it without ruining the dash I would be happy.
If so I would remove the dash bezel and then the mount that holds the radio and heater controls, if this hole isn't enough you can remove the gauge cluster as well. Its only 4 more screws after all. This should be enough to get to it.
dont even use the in dash speaker, run wires to your doors and mount speakers there. the holes for them are already there so all you have to do is drill holes in the door jam and door, then run wire to the radio. its very easy and fast. might even be easier then replacing the dash speaker.
Well I guess I just wont f with it...that is way too much work for one speaker. Oh well, at least the radio in my CJ5 works...and is easy to get to if it ever doesn't. Great design Ford...lame. I thought maybe there was some trick to it, I already looked at removing everything to get at it. It just isn't worth the work, I would rather install a CD player or tape deck in the glove-box and route speakers from it into the doors.
I did mine for my CB radio and play music out the doors.
And its not that hard to get that stuf off, just a few screws. Trust me if you are going to have one of these trucks you will need to take this stuf apart many times and after you do it once theres nothing to it. Heck the whole trucks that way.
its easy to take the heater , radio , and the cluster out........sounds like somebody is lazy
Really lazy when it comes to fixing that crappy little stereo. For example, I have a T18a I am rebuilding right now for my Jeep. I am restoring a Scout 800B I installed the entire driveline and already revived a 63 Scout 80. I just have a lot of projects to finish before I go take my dash apart in the 110+ degree heat for a radio. I thought it might be like a 10 minute job.
Removing the heater would take more than 10 minutes...unless you mean the heater controls, which are also the A/c controls, but if I have to take the entire heater out from under the dash it will be too much of a pita.
This dash is mo much more complicated than my other trucks, the other ones have a few bolts that hold a flat dashboard on...really, really easy to get at everything behind it. And more importantly it all goes back nicely. I have noticed every single thing I have had to do with this Ford has been more difficult than any of my other cars ever, thankfully it is the most durable vehicle I have ever seen and very rarely breaks down.
eh...there are I think 8 or so screws that hold the bezel on. I can have the bezel off gauge cluster out and radio out in less the 5 min. It's really not that hard.

Yeah, I get it now. Some people on here said I had to remove the heater...I thought they meant the heater. Not the heater controls which since I live in Phx I call the A/C controls. When it cools off today I am gonna swap out that speaker. A truck named effy explained it right, I didn't see that earlier. Removing the entire heater would have been insane in this heat..113 today.
But still, way more work than my Jeep. I just pull the *****, remove the two retaining nuts, and the radio comes out from underneath. Don't have to touch anything except the radio, older Scouts are the same way. The Ford isn't the most complicated vehicle on Earth, I know that. Just that my other trucks are possibly the simplest vehicles in Earth.
