Rear End ID Help

OK, I took these pics of the pumpkin, but I am not sure what they mean.

Assuming this one means it's a Dana 60:

I looked at NumberDummy's post from a few months ago, and I know the tag says it's a 3.73 gear ratio. I *think* it says it was made in May of 1994 (which would be interesting), but I am not sure about that part.

Does anyone know how to decode the tag?

Yep. Dana 60.

To accurately decode the tag, if not the axle, look up the Bill of Material (BOM) numbers in Dana Spicer's reference manuals. The link is in the tech info hyperlink sticky....

But I'll help you out since you're a good guy: http://www2.dana.com/pdf/X510-SD.pdf

EDIT: Don't mind the icon in the link... part of the URL codes to that thing. The link works.... just click it and the manual will open.

Thanks Hio, but for some reason, I couldn't get the link to work. I did use it to get on the Dana site, but I couldn't find any information based on the tag.

Fordification.com, however, has a chart of rear axles, and according to that chart "DOTA-AK" indicates a Dana 60 with a 3.73 ratio (which we knew). It also indicates that the axle was made for either a 70 or 71 F250, which is interesting, as my truck is a 72, and according to the door tag, it was built in July of 72.

Odd that they'd have a 71 axle laying around that late in the 72 model year. Or do you think the code carried over into 72?

Weird. The link in the email notifying me of your post, HIO, worked. And the 603194-5 BOM was in fact used in 71 and 72.

Thanks again!

Here's the link with disabled smilies.

In terms of parts laying around, it could have been swapped, a left-over/continuation part into the next model year, or the tag isn't accurate. The best way is to get the BOM stamped on the axle tube. However given the age of these rigs the internals could have been changed too. According to LMC's catalog, it is supposed to be on the longer tube... at least on a D44. It's a six-digit number followed by a dash then a single digit.

I read the BOM on the tag as 603194-5. Correct?

If so, then the code is on page 89 of the reference manual linked above.

The heading is "1971-72 F-250 3/4 Ton 4x2 Pick-up - Full-Float" which sounds correct for your year.

... and no, the latter half of the BOM isn't May 1994.

EDIT... glad you got it to work. I had my post sitting on my PC while I fed my cats.

.. and you're welcome. Glad to help and learn ya!
