The hardest part about the DS-II swap is finding the wiring harness. Then you need the DS-II distributor and DS ignition box with a blue grommet. Unplug your harness and the controller, pull the distributor, install the new one and ignition box, plug in the harness, and go. EXCEPT that you have to mark when the old dizzy is and get the new one back there. AND, you'll need a timing light in order to set the initial advance correctly.

Module identified by a colored plastic square (grommet) above where the wires feed out.

Just put points in the damn thing and fire it up. As simple as the DSII
system is I don't as yet understand it. If it works than fine. But I have yet
to properly trouble shoot one that isn't working.
My DD is an 85 Bronco and has it and so far works great.
But I have a point system off my boat ready to go in
if it ever fails. But know that there is all this knowledge here
on FTE and I am confident we could get my DSII system back up if needed.
I do have a DSII right guy's?

IDK

Yep EEC-III system. I had a 82 Grand Marquis with that setup. Dumped it for a DS2 and non feedback carb.

I though EEC-III was only on the 302 engines.....

I had the EEC-III on my '82 F250 (351W). It also had the famous 7200-VV carb. The computer was mounted on the floor under the driver's seat.
Note that the "MCU" (shown in the photos) and "EEC-III" are not the same thing.

This is my understanding/recollection:
MCU was only for control of feedback carb.
EEC did carb feedback and added control of ignition timing (EEC-III and above could control EFI systems)

This is a lot of good information, and I may look into this DS-II replacement idea. I think I saw a how-to somewhere in the FAQ. However, I'm still very curious if we can discover the whereabouts (if any) of the o2 sensor, or if I ought to take it back to the store and get a refund.

Your exhaust manifold has definitely not ever has an O2 sensor, the casting for the bung isn't there.
I spy a blue strain relief DS2 ignition module in there, EEC 3 used a brown one.
The EEC 3 system uses a DS2 coil so you are most of the way there outside of the distributor.
That carb looks to be non feedback as well.
I don't know too much about how that system works but it looks like you have a mismatch of parts or it has ignition control only. Of course all my Ford shop manuals are an hour away...

Having never seen such an animal up here in the great white north I can only speculate on what wiring changes would need to be made to switch to a vacuum advance distributor, but I don't think it would be difficult as you already have the module.

Even in 86 you could buy a leaded fuel prep 300 truck up here, no cat, no air pump, DS2 and no unleaded fuel only warnings. Not 100% sure about other engine options but I have only seen 300's so far.
