Hey guys I need some help figuring this out. I cracked my front crossmember, the one for the engine and ttb50 about 2 years ago and welded it back up and reinforced it with a piece of 3/16 plate steel. Held good for a while, but problem is its starting to crack again. I would like to replace it this time so I start with a good one, but I assume I can't buy it new anymore. So my question what years will work and is it diesel specific and truck specific? Junk yards around here a slim picking for a truck this old. Sorry for short hand and spelling, using my phone since the computer died lol. Thanks guys for any advice you have.
as far as I know there is no difference from gas to diesel, you just nave to move a couple motor mount plates. that are bolted on. As long as your in the same body style, you should be good, but the 2wd might be different, at least the 87 to 94 2wd frames are different in the very front than 4x4, they could still use the same cross member.
It appears to be just riveted in so it looks to be removable. The original cause looked to be bad ball joints combined with a collapsed shock and me driving through blizzard. Also my motor mounts we missing the nuts on the passenger side creating a lot of torque on it. This time it looks like my friends welding skill was not up to par. My reinforcement is holding but the original weld is cracking.
Looks like I'm hunting for an 80-86 truck at the bone yard then. I'm guessing as long as it was 4x4 it will be usable.
The crossmember is welded onto the sides of the frame inside the crossmember, shouldn't be too bad to get off.
You have to find one off of a 4x4 80-97 diesel or 460, small block gas ones ARE diffent and youd have to fab the drivers side for it to work, other wise there all the same year wise.
80-97? That's great I may be able to find one then. Thanks guys for all the help, really hoping not to have to get rid of my truck would be nice if I could fix it.
