Here's the story, i pulled the 400 out of my f250 (it's the original engine) to be rebuilt. The old motor mounts were shot so i got some new ones. I put the new mounts on the block, lower the block into place, and it just doesnt look like it's fitting.
Basically, the studs on the mounts are just bottoming out in the slot holes on the frame tower, and theres about 1/4" of space between the mount and the frame tower. At first i figured maybe they'll flex in some when i tightened them, i didnt get them very tight at all and the one stud just broke off.
I figured i must of got the wrong mounts, went and got another brand of them, put them and place, and i still get the exact same thing!
From what the parts people tell me, there's no difference between the 4x4 and the 2wd version of the mounts. So i'm at a loss here, anyone know whats going on?
Nobody eh? Problem is i took this thing about 5 months ago, now i dont remember how everything goes back together.
Although...now i do seem to remember something about there being washers that shimmed in between the block and the mount, i suppose i'll just try that...
alright...i used a bunch of washers as shims, took me about 3 hours but i got the one side dead on, the other side had maybe 1/16 space in it, i tightened everything down, and just ended up breaking the stud off that side again. It'd be really nice to know if i'm even supposed to be shimming this thing, or what the problem is...anyone have any clue at all?
I don't know what studs you are referring to. My mounts have a large bolt and nut, but I don't have an F250.
I compared the old mounts to the new ones and they looked identical. I'm talking about the single stud that goes through the frame tower. I have to shim the three bolt holes going through the mount and into the block to get it to fit right.
Apparently i just have to keep trying...what a pain in the ***.
Hm, on my F250 i have a 400m and it looks like the frame has been cut. i was told people did those for 460s mainly but it might just be your problem
No...the frame wasnt cut, the 400 was the original engine for it, and it definitely looks like it was never pulled before.
I asked around some other boards and i've found a few other people who have that problem. I'm still not sure if it's just the quality of the "made in india" mounts i seem to keep getting, under different brand names, or if it's just like that from the factory...

who knows. I know my frame was cut its easy to tell. WE need to make stuff here in the US
4x4 and 2wd are different, ever so slightly (atleast they were on my 300-6 79 bronco). Are you certain left is on left, and right is on right? Assembly is done (by the book) by setting the mount into the frame perch, then put the washer and nut on, but leave slack. Then bolt the mounts to the block. Then tighten the nuts. If you keep going side to side little by little, you'll put even pressure on both sides which might keep from snapping a stud.
What danlee has, is the car version...which is the street rod version.
I would put the stud in the perch and just put the nut on a few threads, then put the bolts into the block. Don't tighten anything until both mounts and all bolts are in place.

I think that is what the 'book' is saying.
Well...with these "made in india" mounts, there's about 1/2" of space total that has to be pulled in. I can get it in close, but i wont even get the nut even close to tight on one side before it just snaps off.
I ordered some other mounts that looked closer to the ones that came with it originally, so i'm hoping those will fit a lot better. Unfortunatly i wont know until next week.
