Body mounts

This was brought up in the 73-79 forum, but not much reply. Where can you buy the perches that the body mount attatches to? Almost every old truck in wisconsin has this problem of rusting through right here. Would it be better to just weld some plate steel in there to fix it?

sorry for not replying, i must not of seen it. my front perches are also rusted out. as a temporary fix, i had my dad punch holes into some steel plates. theyre gonna get welded in the holes that are too big until i can find the perches from a donor truck. i've heard of other people welding plates in, and someone i talked to had welded washers into the holes with good results.

Nobody that I could find. I ended up buying a 2wd frame from Texas just for the mounts. There was no saving mine.

2classics,

I have the same problem with my front and rear perches. As a temporary fix on one of the fronts, I welded a metal plate over the big hole and re-drilled the bolt hole. I actually used a metal cover plate from a 4"x4" electrical junction box. I will replace that with some thicker steel this winter and do the other side.

Labor Day weekend I went up to Crivitz, WI to do some off-roading and kept hearing loud popping when I'd flex the truck. Turns out that the crossmember at the rear cab mounts is broken all the way through at both sides. The rubber bushings are all that's holding the center section in place. The holes that used to be 1/2" dia. for the bolts are now almost 2" dia. I'm sure that's what caused mine to break.

You could also check the online store here. I thought I saw them in there at one time.

Good luck.

Yeah, I was just messing around in the back yard in a dirt pile after taking my swaybars off. Looking at the difference in articulation when I noticed that my cab was waaayyy off centered from the bed. First thought was wow, the frame really flexes alot, but looking closer the body mount on the rear of the cab pulled out of the perch about 2-3 inches.

When I first got my 78, I was doing the same thing in the yard with two guys in the front seat with me. When we stopped, I couldn't open the door. When I looked at it a few days later, I found that the channel on the bottom of the cab and the back half of the floor were almost gone. The back of the cab dropped down about 1 1/2" when the channel collapsed. I ended up cutting out about a foot and a half of the floor in the rear of the cab, and welding in a 2x4 steel channel and a new floor.

Now, it's the cross member that needs to be replaced. I plan to run ladder bars up to that member and was going to replace it anyway.

What year/type of truck do you have? Also, there's a Wisconsin Chapter forum on this site, too. Stop by and introduce yourself.

I decided to start the repairs on my rear cab mounts & cross member last night. Here's what the crossmember looks like now.

I think my original idea of "just welding the cracks" went right out the window. I'm gonna replace the whole thing with 2"x4.5" tube steel. Unless someone knows where to get a new crossmember like this besides the boneyard.

Thanks!

I just made one yesterday from a 2"x4" steel channel. It was $5 from the scrap guy in town.
