Change A/T fluid procedure

Changing filter and fluid with the drain 4 Qts and add 4 Qts, drain 4 Qts and add...method.

Question is remove and clean pan first, reinstall, then begin draining n adding then remove pan when fluid is clean, replace filter , reinstall with gasket adhesive.

OR: drain and add then at the end of draining and adding remove pan, clean, new filter and install.

My factory (E4OD) converter had a drain plug in it. So between that, the pan and the cooler lines, I was able to get nearly all of it out.

Remove pan.
Replace filter.
Reinstall pan, no sealer.
Add 4 qts/l of fluid.
Remove return cooler line at radiator.
Place a hose over the fitting and direct it into an empty pail.
Start engine.
Keep adding fluid until that exiting the cooler line is clean.
Stop engine. Reconnect cooler line.
Start engine.
Adjust fluid to proper level.

Shut off engine.
Close hood.
Crack a beer.

OK ! idea is used fluid IS filtered. Changing filter before adding new fluid doesn't pollute new fluid from old filter ? Removing fuzz and ? does improve the cleaning.

Using the transmission line end is easier than using the cooler end ?

K's trans end use is the first I've read online.

When the pan is dropped to change the filter all fluid will be removed.

Install the new filter and pan then add fresh fluid.

Removing a cooler line at the rad or transmission is whatever is easier.
By removing it at the transmission old fluid would be removed from the line. Not a whole bunch in there but it will all be removed.

good advice - AAA

The fluid change went well with 22 Qts Castrol in with 12.8 left in.

I had abd moment when a yellow plastic toy fell out n didn't fit anywhere but atop the magnet...Haynes saved the day there.

Used a poly tube with worm drive clamp on top fitting with enough footage running out over floor thru door to waiting jugs.

Pumped abt 2 Qts before sputtering fluid and air. Stopped and added 2.

Car washed pan area, brushing off nuts n seams that were painted with rusto when new.

The gasket ? Cleaned surfaces with a green pad soaked in Gumout then wiped A/T on the clean housing surface to receive a new gasket held down on the pan with adhesive spray.

Utube said use silicone tube sealant but Haynes said clean and refit....Haynes is correct ? The housing when I removed the pan looked untouched by sealers of any type.

Castrol as new fluid takes care to move from stop. Allowing pressure build with slow brake release on all move offs is well taken by universals and LSD diff.

Shifted thru RD21. Shifting coughed fluid thru the tight o clamp so doahn leave your dollies in there.

Scrubbed pan out with HD green pad and Gumout with gloves and a breeze.

The magnet comes off.
