My '72 F250 has the 8,100 GVWR rear axle with hub drums (drums behind the hub). Where the heck can I find replacement drums? Shops sell the drum itself but no hub. Does my drum actually separate from the hub? I'd take it apart to check but I'm trying to make sure I have all of my parts ready so I only disassemble it once.
So I should be able to pull the axle out, pull the hub off, and then the drum? They look pretty solidly connected but I'm hoping they'll break free from each other
Yes, if that is full floating rear end and the drums are stuck just hit the face of the drum between the wheel studs very hard several times. Rust tends to build up over the years and sort of glue the drum to the hub. Using a heavy dead blow style hammer will yeild the best results, but a solid 4lb will work also.
Back when I used to work as a mechanic I went to work for a brand new shop. One the second day the owner who knew nothing about cars came running out of the front office screaming at me to stop hitting that drum with a hammer. He was going to fire me on the spot before I could even explain what I was doing. I was just trying to get the drum off of an old pickup.
Okay well I'll have to take a picture and show you what I mean, 'cause I've dealt with drums like you're explaining and I understand it, but I'm telling you some things up with mine.
You've seen those spacers that go over the studs, between the wheel and the drum right? Just a big old' metal ring with holes in it for studs. Imagine one of those, but way larger and one part with the hub. That's what's in front of my drum
Not sure what the spacers are...yes a picture will help. This is what I found over at Fordification...it shows a typical full floater for your truck. The drum would just slip over the outer hub.
8100#GVWR doesn't sit on a 9 inch AFAIK. The 60 is what I have under my 10,000#GVWR, figured the 8100 would be the same.
Check your U-joints while you are at it. I just heard the familiar metal on metal ping of one of mine going bad on the way back from the dump Sunday. A $5 part is a silly reason to have to call a tow truck.
Yup those are the drums I have. I wonder why he didn't replace his drums or at least turn them? I want to see if I can find a source to buy new ones in case I can't turn mine
