hi riverking here. i have an f350 2001 psd 7.3, each time i hook up jumper cables to it,positive to hot ground to frame. sparks are emitted. i assume there's a short. i began unhooking wires and fuses, relays along the ignition system. my starter turns over well. i have 1 new bat and 1 last yrs. my question is where else could be causing a short? i have been following fte since 2009 this is the first big problem i've had.
Now you have two weak batteries, unfortunately. Always replace the batteries in pairs in multi-battery systems. I just replaced EIGHT Group 31 batteries in my coach with three of them saying they were still good by load testing. All of them were replaced. I doubt you have a real problem at all. I'd just go buy two Group 27 batteries for your truck and I bet it starts right up.
if you are jumping it with dead batteries, that is normal.
^ What he said. Since you are jumping a vehicle I find it safe to assume that one has a depleted battery and a spark is expected upon making final connection regardless of whether you are hooking up positive or negative last. In fact if you don't get that spark then you have not made the connection, which is also indicated by the audible draw down of the alternator on the jumping vehicle.
i meant to say, i disconnected bat to starter relay. still have short. i have a book showing main power cable going to starter with seperate wire to relay. starter works fine, does not hang up, looks to be turning engine about 180 rpms. but still a short an no start.
You are asking one question but it seems as though u are seeking the answer to another. The spark when making the jumper cable connections is NORMAL.
However, is your truck turning over but not starting? That is an entirely different situation . Give some more information. DO you have a wait to start light when u turn the key on?

I would like to thank everyone who replied to my dilemma. f-350 is running, not sure how long. wd 40 is better to start these trucks. I thought at first it was running only on wd 40, because it wouldn't run very long. the pcm is hanging under wheelwell, noticed wait to start lite clicking on an off. wiggled connection, fired up without wd-40. previous owner used loc-ties to hold pcm in place. where do i post help to replace bolt that holds connection to pcm? I would like to add the main reason this truck is running is FTE!
