Cautionary temps while towing. Need input right away please
Hey gang, I'm preparing for a drive where I will be ascending a grade that climbs 6500 feet in 12 miles. It's a steep motha ! ! !
Anyway, I noticed my oil temp today on a mild climb rose to 230*, with coolant temp at 216*. I figured I probably should have a good idea what are critical temps where I should begin to worry. Better to know the limit rather than find myself on the side of the road, ya know...
Can you all please give me your thoughts on the following:
- High limit for Oil Temp
- High limit for Coolant Temp
- High limit for Transmission Temp
- High limit for EGT
Where should I stop pushing the envelope?
I figure that EGT should probably be below 1300*, but if you have another thought on that I'd appreciate your thoughts on that too.
Thanks so much! I will be leaving in an hour or two so please hurry. The big climb will be tomorrow, however. It's suppose to be rather hot tomorrow too.
The 15* temp split is non towing on flat ground at 65. Your 14 pulling a hill (especially if towing) is good I belive. Should have a pro chime in shortly.
Tim: just want to shoot something out quick as it looks like you are about to take off. EGT pre turbo 1300 is a good number. I think PCM defuels at EOT of 253 and coolant temp in the 230s. You running synthetic oil? It will still be doing the job at that temp. Fan seem to be working ok? (hear it ramp up steeply in the 2 hundred teens range and higher?)
Common thinking is to run motor at higher RPM (hold the lower gear) on a grade to help with cooling...
That's all I can think of my friend... Good luck and have a great trip!
Please don't shoot me folks, I'm just pulling from memory....
Just don't try to drag race up and you should be fine. The engine is designed to do this work. I would personally aim for a speed that kept the coolant around 215, or just below full fan speed. Keeping in a lower gear is often a good idea but in my experience the computer knows what gear you should be in.
Sorry forgot the trans: it's synthetic and I doubt you'll be limited by it's temp -- I've pulled some good grades on hot days and seen high 180s and I bet it's safe well into the 200s (220-230s?)
Good oil, keep below peaks of 240
Coolant below 230 for short burstsMake sure fan is on high anything over 220 coolant temp
You can pull hills at EGT of under 1300 all day, just don't let it go over 1350 for more than a few minutes.
Again, revs are your friend, water pump, coolant flow in oil cooler, radiator, fan speed, revs are your friend.
In Western Canada where I tow. We have steep grades everywhere, they are long, and we can hit 115 f air temps easy. I have never had a problem towing with oil temps, or coolant ever over 230. When the fan is on high at 219, she starts cooling off fast.
Have fun and watch the beast work!
Also if you do start to overheat don't shut it down just slow down.
That also goes for a bit of cool down time after you take the load
off. If you do need to pull over let it run to help carry the heat away.
Moving air is always you best friend. Because it takes the heat with it.
Great info guys, as always.
Get to give her a work out tomorrow. At the bottom of the grade for the night. Heading up tomorrow. I'll set the alarms on Dashboss per your advice, now that I know what I'm looking at.
THANK YOU! You all are great.
p.s., regarding the quality of oil, I'm running Mobil 1 full synthetic Turbo Diesel Truck 5/40. The stuff that was on sale at Auto Zone. Great deal, thanks to you guys for sharing the information.
When pulling my 11k trailer, by the time I get to the top of a mountain like that my temps are very similar to yours with ECT 218-220° and EOT 230°. Of course the fan ramps up and down a few times during the climb and at the end, its singing.
I take it your pulling your trailer?
With mine empty, my temps wont get near what they do pulling.
Great info guys, as always.
Get to gTT myself and e her a work out tomorrow. At the bottom of the grade for the night. Heading up tomorrow. I'll set the alarms on Dashboss per your advice, now that I know what I'm looking at.
THANK YOU! You all are great.

Happy trails, Tim
Please report your temps when you have time. I'm about to tow a 9k lb tt and want to do a comparison.
Just giving you a tip. It works on my truck doing severe grades. If or when it starts to appear to be getting to warm I drop the gear manually down to 3rd and set the cruise at 50 to 55 mph. Sit back and enjoy the drive. the temps drop dramatically.
