Reps sent to Mark for providing the answers I was looking for regarding overheating in reverse and the tranny gauge not picking up on it fast enough! :-)
Reps sent to Stewart for his patience... :-)
Next time I'm out in the X, I'm going to drive it in reverse while I'm running my errands. If I can make it around town and back to the house in reverse without getting stopped by the police (and transported who knows where against my will), I'll have an answer regarding the tranny-temp-in-reverse-dilemma question.

The converter always heats faster than the sump no matter what you are doing.
Your trans heats up just backing up at 3 MPH for 1 minute for no good reason? Common sense will tell you that is wrong, think about it.
I think there are "hot oil out" inline sensors that give you a better idea of what the converter is doing but the converter temp varies so wildly that they don't mean much.
