I have looked around and it seems most of the MPG numbers are for SRW 4x4 trucks. I will be going to college next year and the commute will be around 80 miles per day. I'd would rather put money into my current truck than buy another one. I am looking at regearing my rearend to 3.55's. My truck is a 1992 Ford F-350 Crew-cab DRW. The engine (7.3l), clutch (SMF conversion), and transmission(ZF5) all only have about 20,000 miles on them. The truck is in great shape cosmetically and mechanically and I am very picky about keeping up on maintenance. It has all 6 new Firestone Transforce HT tires as well.
My question is with this combo, what gains am I looking at with regearing from 4.10's to 3.55's? I know I will lose low end power for towing, but, I don't do much heavy towing. I'd rather see the better MPG's for college and switch back to 4.10's in the future if necessary.

Depends upon your tire size. I think you'll come ahead by buying a small commuter car. 32 mpgs will cut your fuel bill in half.

Sell or park your truck. Buy a used diesel Jetta or Passat from the late nineties off of craigslist. You could find one for $2000-3000. It'll pay for itself in fuel savings in a few weeks if you are driving 80 miles/day. Get 45mpg with no mods.
8k lb DRW 4X4 box truck.
(weighed 9k on return trip if you want to get technical lol)
however,as good as that may be.it still sucks lmao.id never had done the trip if i didn't need the truck but my little mazda 626 (35 mpg just around town! on lower priced fuel to boot) might have had a hard time carrying a 800 lb hydraulic lift gate on it's roof.
park the pig.save it for tow/haul duty.get yourself a small bomber 4 cyl car for running around in.

What college? Parking is insane at most colleges so maybe ditch the car or truck alltogether. Use public transit and find local housing. Even if you could get 20mpg in that truck for a 80-mile round-trip, you'd be lucky to spend less than $100/week on just fuel.
Go really cheap - get a motorcycle. 50-60 MPG, cheap to buy, cheap insurance, easy to park... And you can throw it in the bed of your truck if you need to.

Now that's a good idea, as long as the PO goes to a college where it doesn't snow.
