'96 F150 Shift Fork Help
I bought the 1-2 fork, shifter rebuild kit, and freeze plugs from Allstate Gear last month. When the stuff arrived I noticed the invoice listed it as the 3-4 fork, with the same part number as was on my order for the 1-2 fork.
Much back and forth, I havent gotten anywhere with Allstate, but thats another talk.
Here are my questions,
Supposedly the fork I received is the 3-4 fork. It looks NOTHING like either fork in the transmission.
In the pic, the fork on the LEFT is the 1-2 fork that came out, with the right fork being the replacement.
88-95 was a different number than 96 & up.
Do I have an older transmission in my truck?
Also, When I took the fork out, three small parts came out of the collar that holds the shift rod. A ball bearing, and two rounded pins. I'll post a pic when I get one. I assume these are for the detent, how do they go back in? (Rubber plug end (rear))
Thank you in advance.
Fork on the left is the original 1-2 fork that came out

Southwest's web-site shows the same part number 23 for three different parts.
Obviously they sent you a 3-4 fork which must be for a 96 or later.
Here's a link showing what a early shift cover looks like. The poster replaced the 1-2 fork which was the original old design where you needed to remove two shifter rods to get the 1-2 fork off. He installed a later design that allowed only the removal of one shift rod to replace the 1-2 fork. Get the 1-2 for a 95 and it should be like your original.

Here's picture of the shifter cover parts. You might be able to id the parts that fell out.
That's what I was starting to believe.
I can't really make outthe year stamp on the casing, but it does look like 95
Also I read that the earlier versions of the M5R2 have the back up light switch to the rear of the cover, and the later ones have it to the front of the cover. Mine is in the rear.
Thanks again for your help.
Ford and the Motive Gear catalog both list the following:
1-2 Fork, 1988-1995 - F1TZ7230A
1-2 Fork, 1996 and up - F65Z7230AA
3-4 Fork, 1988-1995 - F1TZ7231A
3-4 Fork, 1996 and up - F65Z7231AA
Not sure what the differences are between them. I called around and everyone seems to say that you won't know what you got until you take the cover off. Ford apparently installed 1995 transmissions in 1996 trucks.
Perhaps there's a date stamp on the outside casing of the transmission? I haven't checked that far yet.
Mine says:
F1TA

New ATF of course while I was there.
On the shifter lever itself, there is a small guide pin that sits in a groove on the shifter mount. This pin was missing, however it appears to be ok, as the wedge clamp is tightened down good.
Here is my concern. In second gear there was always a whirring, metal on metal sliding noise. (Not grinding, rubbing I suppose) It's still there, and after having done this repair, it logically seems like the fork is rubbing against the syncro. Like something is out of alignment. Leading me to think I'll be back here in short time.
I dont see any alignment/adjustment of the shift rods or forks. Any ideas?
On the shifter top cover there are two pressed in pins the shifter pivots on.
The pins do wear and can easily be replaced.
The most common problem with the M5r2 was the rubber plugs on the back of the shifter cover would allow fluid
to leak out and eventually the bearings would go bad.
I put in a shifter rebuild kit. The old pins did not appear worn at all, and were in there snug. The pins that came with the new kit fit very loose. I've now noticed and odd radial play in the shifter was not there before.
Look what I see underneath today, the pin has backed out! Im going to re-use the old pins.
