Hi guys. I am trying to put back together my 5-speed overdrive shifting top an am unsure how to go about it, the transmission got stuck in 2nd the other day and for the life of me I could not get it unstuck. I pulled the top off through the inside cab and the 1-2 fork was worn out. I have the new part and am ready to put the shifting rods back and I am very unsure about the springs and bearings. also how to get the top back on the Trans. is this something I can do or do I need to take it to a real mechanic? Anybody know where I might get some illustrated directions

Reason: add to
to answer your subsequent post ... yes, you are posting in the right section.
hopefully, help will arrive. meanwhile, try searching for an exploded view of your transmission .
Use a 5/32 drift punch and knock out the roll pins that hold the shifter forks to the shifter rods.
Remove the 3 plugs at the back edge of the shifter cover. That will allow the shift rods to slide out thru the holes in the cover.
Below is a picture of how the shifter forks are attached to the shift rods.
Notice there is a metal ball and spring. As you remove the shift fork from the shift rod they will fly out. So becarefull you don't hurt yourself or loose the ball and spring.
Replace the 3 plugs with metal ones. Dorman 108-555 is a 5/8 freeze plug which is what most people use. Your local auto parts may sell them. If not
SummitRacing.com sells them for $3.97 for a pack of 10.
First picture shows the 3 plugs.
Second picture in the lower left shows the ball and spring which holds the forks in position.
Third and Fourth describes the procedure. Just do what is necessary to remove the forks.
When you reinstall the top cover make sure the trans is in neutral.
I want to Thank Everyone for the Help ya'll gave. I am gonna have to put everything on hold until my part comes back. seems I didn't do a through enough investigation on the part I needed. my truck is a 96 but it has a 95 transmission. I just assumed since my truck is a 96 I had to order a 96 part. oh well a good lesson learned but an expensive one. Thanks again.
Hello Again, finally got the right part in and I believe I can get it back together with help from the diagrams ya'll posted. I do have one problem though I lost one of the small round bearings and am gonna have to get another. Any body know where I can get one? The Diagram also calls for 2 large and a small interlock pin. I can't find the small one so I guess I will have to get one of those also. Do ya'll know if they make some kind of package with these in them? Thanks Again!
See if you can get them from a transmission shop. I have to take a look at my transmission too when I get a chance, my reverse just doesnt engage anymore so im guessing that is going to be pretty fun .
