96 4.0 overheat?
We've got a 96 ranger 4.0 v6 and we are having a problem with the temperature gauge. Our first guess was the thermostat, but after replacing it twice with new ones the problem continued. We also flushed the radiator the correct way and nothing changed. We narrowed it down to 2 possible points: either the thermostat sending unit is bad or the temp gauge is bad. At a normal idle the truck runs at about H according to the gauge. When you raise the rpm's (we did to 2000 rpm) the temp gauge went 3/4 to H. Its very confusing because when we did the test runs it was running for no more then 5 minutes and never went above 35mph and the engine gave off no heat. Has anyone experienced the same problem or do you know any other reasons for this and how to solve?

Gave off no heat, as in the heater doesn't work. This means either the heater core is plugged, or you have lots of air pockets trapped in the cooling system. Air locks will prevent coolant from circulating. Sounds to me like the bypass may not be working other. What brand thermostat did you use?
