Engine Won't Heat Up.

I have a 89 F150 4x4 302 5sp. The temp gauge will rise up to the N, then drop a bit once the thermostat opens and never get back to the N in NORMAL.

I have replaced the following parts: radiator, water pump, 195 deg thermostat, upper and lower hoses, and both temp sensors. Any idea why it won't heat up? The hoses have pressure and I'm not losing any coolant that I can tell. The fan doesn't seem to be stuck full on. I'm pretty certain that I don't have air in the system and the coolant seems to be flowing through everywhere just fine. I also have heat in the cab. Could it just be that the gauge is broken?

It also has a high idle - around 1100 RPM. Not sure if that makes any difference or not.

Thanks,
Shelby

You would be better off with an aftermarket temp gauge than trusting a stock Ford guage.

" The fan doesn't seem to be stuck full on. "

Do you have an aftermarket electric fan and not the stock engine mounted fan?

No it is the standard fan. I just meant that it gets loud right after I turn it on, but the clutch kicks in and it calms down after a minute.

Why don't you try a Candy thermometer in the open Radiator. You can see the temp change as the thermostate opens. Then see where it is when everything is warmed up. If this temp is reasonable like 10-15 lower than your thermostate, then stop worrying about the gauge. Just consider where it is to be normal, and higher to be a problem.
Good Luck Frank

Those aren't true temperature sensors and gauges. The sensor is simply an off on switch and the gauge has a resistor in series with it to show a partial deflection when the engine is warm.

If your thermostat is opening, then the truck is warming up.
