I replaced the Injection Pump on my truck a 1987 F250 with a 6.9 N/A Diesel. I put the timing mark on the new IP at the same place as the one I pulled off. Ever since it seems like there is always a rattle I almost never heard before. Once in a while it would rattle but not as much as it does now. Even at idle it rattles a little. I'm thinking the timing is advanced. Looking at the IP from the front of the truck would I need to turn the pump towards the left/passengers side or the right/drivers side?
I tried that a few years ago when I replaced the IP and was told by the local mechanics "If it starts and runs good, run it." I'd love to find a mechanic in the middle georgia area That would be able to either time it or tell me what it needs. Anybody in the middle Georgia area up to help me time this good old work horse?
Power, EGT's, and MPG's can be significantly affected by timing. So "just run it" might work for a beater on no budget, but it's worth getting it done right especially if you drive lots of miles. the tools to do it yourself aren't that expensive.
Pushing the pump towards the pass side advances it, towards the drivers side retards. That timing mark on the housing is just a static mark to get it running, it is not the final say in timing.
Talk to Gary (Icanfixall) at Oil Burners, he has a rental program for his timing meters and will help you via phone if necessary to get it done properly.
yeah renting the meter from Gary is the way to go unless you want to buy the tools.
he has great rates.your diesel should have some rattle to it.im thinking about bumping chip's timing back up a degree to 8 BTDC and checking her economy again.though the 7 is real snappy spool up and fun to drive,i think she's down an mpg.......who knows, perhaps she retarded a bit since i last timed it now too.owning the tools is cool cus you can experiment.but 8 BTDC is a pretty safe zone to be in.
