I have an '85 F-250 with the 6.9 in it. I was hoping to get a little more power out of it. I know I can turn the pump up and advance the timing a little bit, but how do I go about doing either of these? Thanks in advance
The first flange on the left labeled driveshaft mounts to the IP drive gear.
The cut away second flange from the left is what mounts it to the engine with three bolts.
Timing set only is about 100 dollars here in WV with current shop rates.
I get the timing part, but how do I turn the fuel up?
What exactly happens if the timing is advanced too far? I know that's bad in a gas engine since it results in detonation, but what happens in a diesel?
It depends on how much to advanced the timing is.
Since a diesel fires by detonation if it is to advanced the shock from firing on the compression stroke can break or melt lots of expensive parts.
Pistons, rods and crankshafts are the most expensive ones.
Glow plugs are the cheapest ones.
Do you have a pyrometer Southtowns27?
Also when under wide open throttle do you have any black smoke from the engine at the present fuel setting?
If you don't have a pyrometer you should not turn the fuel up.
If you do have any black smoke under wide open throttle, all more fuel will get you is more black smoke, not more power.
i did my own timing and fueling it worked very well lots of power now just have to whatch it when i let my cuz drive (he tends to get a 6in long flame out the stack) its very easy each mod takes ten min for timing u will need a special tool for getting to the one bolt but after that its cake theres no point in spedning the money to pay some one else to do it this works well when done carefully
