Well, some of y'all know already that I have had some trouble with my new injection pump. Whether it be a timing issue or a bad pump, I don't know. I have adjusted it dozens of times; I would expect to have been close or at least running good one of the times. I got pooched on the timing meter I "bought" or more like donated $200 to some guy I don't know. I needed this truck running 3 weeks ago and I am at a loss for what to do next. I am moving into a new apartment in 3 weeks and I need my truck to move my junk. I also have some work related things I need it for.
I'm not sure how a luminosity/pulse timing meter work with an RPM meter. The Rotunda unit I was going to buy pretty much told you your current timing in degrees and RPM. Either way, my $200 is tied up in charity right now.
I did mark my old IP before I took it out with this kind of BS in mind and I am glad I did. Once I get moved, I will have some more time to dicker around with the thing.
No matter what I set the IP timing to, when the truck warms up, it makes a chugging sound and the engine shakes side to side enough that I can see it shaking and feel it throughout the cab. There is a light haze of smoke from the exhaust at idle. The IP has been up to almost 1/3" advanced from the center timing mark, to exactly at the timing mark. The more retarded I make it, the worse it runs. When all the way advanced it rattles even off idle. Anywhere in between and advanced or retarded, it chugs when it gets warm.
I'm off to rip that SOB out of there. Sorry about the ants but I want to be thorough.
too bad you couldn't just drive over there and pickup your meter in person? didn't you say you were only an hour away or something? why didn't you just go and get it in person,in the first place?
id like to see a video of your truck when you say the timing is too far advanced.so far the only ones iv seen are very retarded engine noise.very gasser sounding with no rattle.
sure thats a cold start with timing advance on too,but still.you get the idea.make her rattle some Eaton.
with the timing advance off,it still shouldn't sound like a gas job.still plenty of rattle to let ya know shes an oil burner.
I wish Brimmstone was an hour away. He is 315 miles away and that is one way; about 5:30 minute drive in good conditions. I don't even know his address and he hasn't responded to my inquiries in a week.
I did make a new video before I pulled the pump. I tried to show the shaking but I am not sure you can see it well. I will post a link as soon as I finish uploading it. The pump is not as advanced as I have had it before but about a dime or dime and a half retarded from that most advanced position. It didn't run well being too advanced.
The pump is sitting in my living room right now. I am getting ready to swap the lines and reinstall the old pump. I hope the old seal holds up.
Hey eaton start cracking injector lines, the knock and shake my not be the pump it's more then likly a weak injector your pump has found. At idle are you getting a dead knock that goes away when you rev it?

I did not remove the timing gear housing. I cracked each injector and the engine runs noticeably worse on each one. I did not see any leaky return lines or injectors, either.
But you may have an injector not atomizing the fuel correctly, it will sound like a dead knock that slowly comes in at idle and go away once you pick it up a tad
inside my truck you dont feel anything but in the engine bay i would bet mine sounds the same and would make a camera do that. From what you are describing, you have a crapped out injector in there somewhere. How old are they? I am thinking that is your problem bro, i know when i replaced my injectors and left in the old pump, i made things worse. Got the new IP and it was night and day.. An injector could be sticking open from the new IP pressure. That old pump was just right for the injectors. Your timing issue doesnt make sense because a dime width off on mine and it runs completely different. Maybe take a look at some pcola injectors, really should replace both ip and injectors when doing that stuff.
The injectors are brand new Delphi BB codes pop tested and matched by Russ (typfour).
I bought all the right stuff but something isn't right. If the truck is advanced, it will rattle even when revved, if it is more retarded, it will just chug and shake more. It still chugs and shakes when advanced, though.
My cold advance solenoid has never worked and is disconnected. I also have tried disconnecting the cold timing advance to no avail.
I have ran it until it got pretty warm but not up to full operational temperature. I have let it idle with a few revs for about 10-15 minutes max. I try not to let it run too long because the chugging gets worse and I don't want to break a motor mount or anything else.
Actually, I take that back. I did get it up to full operating temp. I drove it a few miles around the block when I first installed the pump. It did chug and it ran like crap and smoked a lot. I know at that point, it was pretty retarded which is probably why it smoked.
If re-installing the old IP does not solve the problem, I will buy a set of Delphi remanufactured injectors from Pensicola Diesel and install them with the new IP. Hopefully Russ will be able to take them and inspect them. I was pretty careful installing them and I kept the caps on unless I was installing O-rings, return caps or injector lines. I always put the caps back on so nothing would fall in.
That or I'll install the old injectors with the old pump just to get running again. I don't have too many return line cap O-rings to blow through, though.
sorry to hear your having such a hard time giving the old idi a tune Eaton.
between ip,injectors, poor results with buying from brimstone over on oil burners etc.etc.
hopefully your injectors are fine and you just got a bad ip,and whoever you got it from will go good on an exchange for ya.i don't recall now,but wasn't it one of the pumps from U-haul or?
most of us tune 'em up and are happy with fuel economy and performance gains.hope it all works out in the end.sure is rough to have a truck down like this for so long.id be in big,big trouble if my truck was down for even a day or two.three days would simply be unacceptable.i can't imagine being down for as long as you have been.
best of luck!
