Yes, it's possible.
There was a running change in 2008. The first part of the year the trans had both an external and internal filter. The external filter needs to be changed, the internal filter does not. After the change the external filter was eliminated and the internal filter was improved. These filters also need to be changed.
The easiest way to tell what you have is to get under the truck and follow the cooler line from the rear of the trans. See if it goes directly to the radiator or if there is a filter in the line.
