help identify this tailgate

I talked to mid early ford about some tail lights brackets, seems like I don't have a stock tail gate, my bolts are about 3 inch apart and the brackets are about 2inch

Hard to tell on the tailgate, but I'd guess its a stock gate with some round bar pounded into the lower part of the tailgate and hung with some home brewed hinges.

I agree, it looks home made to me. I bet if you remove that backing plate on the backside of the stake pockets you will find the properly spaced holes.

no i added the SS piece on the back side so that i could add the brackets i drilled and tapped a hole there for the bottom bracket ,,

So what does this mean, , is it a 53 tail gate, , i tried to get the right bracket, and they didnt know what i had, ,,i did order the long stright ones, not the bent ones but the holes do not line up

It looks like you could modify the brackets by cutting the holes vertically into slots. loosen bottom hinge bolt, and remove the top on, slip the bracket in over the bottom bolt and center it between the bolts. replace top bolt and tighten both to lock the bracket in place.
