I was taking off the factory tailgate yesterday (boy, those things are heavy with the step in them) and noticed a strange bracket on the passenger side just below the tailgate. It is black, about 3 inches wide at the base and was not being "used" by the factory tailgate. It appears to be a "receiver" for something because it has an opening on the outside, facing backwards. Anyone have any ideas what this thing is? I looked in the manual and did not find it. I was going to take it off and just save it in the garage, it only has two bolts holding it on. It is not hurting anything, but once again, just curious.
If you look at the bottom of the tailgate, you will see a matching/mating tab that inserts into the bracket. It's not clear to me what the function would be, but someone believes it is important to align the tailgate to the truck via the bracket. ???

Thanks RoadJunkie, your absolutely right. I went out to the shop and looked at the factory tailgate and saw the tab. Wonder why they would have done that. Not sure the tailgate has a problem moving left to right when it is shut.
if memory serves me right its something about the step gates only..
non-step dont have that bracket on teh body/ or the gate.
i bet its to stop the gate from moving side to side when you use the step.
Fordfanatic- Now that makes sense to me. I knew there had to be a reason for it, the engineers are normally pretty smart when the design these things. Thanks, Glenn
