??? for tailgate gurus...

I bought one of these:

FireStorm Scanning LED Tailgate Bar | PlasmaGlow

and of course I didn't even look at the tailgate before I ordered it, but on the bottom right hand side is a bracket on the frame and a guide piece mounted to the tailgate itself. Looks to be something to help line up your tailgate when re-installing it as the two pieces do not actually touch but the inverted shark fin on the tailgate fits in a notch on the frame bracket, but there is no support or physical connection between the two.

My question is: Is this thing necessary and does it do anything special that I would need to leave it on because as it is, there is no way to mount the tailgate light I ordered? Looks like I could take it off and nothing would change as I don't plan on taking off my tailgate very often, if ever.

TIA.

This bracket has been a mystery for years. If you have some time to kill search the various SD threads for the last 10 years to start.

And I'm not being a wise ****, literally seen hundreds of attempts at figuring this thing out.

I don't even know what to call it to search for it...

"Tailgate bracket" yields nothing useful.

I found an exploded diagram of the tailgate at partsguyed.com but it does not show this bracket.

It's kind of like your appendix or tonsils. No one knows what they do but if they give you grief, get rid of them!

I have had 2 trucks whereby I mounted a lightbar. An 08 and a 11. In both cases the tailgates had these parts and in both cases I removed the part. In the case of the 08, I removed the light bar and put the part back on when I traded it in. Still have it off the 11. No idea what it does, but see no ill effects and have it that way for a year.

This is all I found in a quick search. It looks like it should be a hard stop if the cables broke but it does not do that. The alignment thing is a good guess but it is not precise enough or functional for that either. I think you could break something with it though, crimp a pipe, open a beer bottle maybe.

Ok then...from what I have gathered it has to do with the tailgate’s step. Since you have the piece on both of your trucks I trust you had the tailgate step on both of them also. Is that a true statement?

I just can't see what it does for a stepped tailgate that it would not need for a non-stepped tailgate if you were standing on it...

Oh well...time for a "brackendectomy"
