??? for tailgate gurus...

and of course I didn't even look at the tailgate before I ordered it, but on the bottom right hand side is a bracket on the frame and a guide piece mounted to the tailgate itself. Looks to be something to help line up your tailgate when re-installing it as the two pieces do not actually touch but the inverted shark fin on the tailgate fits in a notch on the frame bracket, but there is no support or physical connection between the two.
My question is: Is this thing necessary and does it do anything special that I would need to leave it on because as it is, there is no way to mount the tailgate light I ordered? Looks like I could take it off and nothing would change as I don't plan on taking off my tailgate very often, if ever.
TIA.
And I'm not being a wise ****, literally seen hundreds of attempts at figuring this thing out.

"Tailgate bracket" yields nothing useful.
I found an exploded diagram of the tailgate at partsguyed.com but it does not show this bracket.

This is all I found in a quick search. It looks like it should be a hard stop if the cables broke but it does not do that. The alignment thing is a good guess but it is not precise enough or functional for that either. I think you could break something with it though, crimp a pipe, open a beer bottle maybe.
I just can't see what it does for a stepped tailgate that it would not need for a non-stepped tailgate if you were standing on it...

Oh well...time for a "brackendectomy"
