Does anyone have any comments about the dual mass flywheel on these trucks, I'm having some tranny problems, when I press in the clutch things seem to be working ok but when I shift to new gear and release clutch pedal it sounds like I have a tranny full of gravel. Any suggestions
I do not like the durability inferiority of a dual mass flywheel, but if I was you I'd pull a pto cover. That description sounds like transmission woes. If it's a bearing issue, you might catch it before it becomes a broken everything issue and be able to overhaul it.
If you've got a 4x4 transfer case, try putting it in neutral and seeing what happens when you let out the clutch.
Oh, and I'm not sure what speed you're letting the clutch out at -- if your RPM is low(<1200 or so) when you let it out, you'll hear some gear-mesh sounds; keeping the revs up in the normal range(say 1400+) will quiet it down.
I am no expert but I do have one comment about the DMF, they are friggin expensive.
Ours is not horrid but not great -- should have converted to the single when clutch was replaced but did not have enough info on it yet. Had a mechanic do the service and he said that one of the spring things was missing. I understand this is why it is noisy to turn off.
the only thing a DMF is good for is tying a rope to it and tossing it in the creek to use as an anchor point when fishing.

Preferably you should perform the boat anchor conversion ~before the thing grenades and cracks your aluminum ZF main case. You DON'T want to add the price of a new transmission to you SMF conversion... That's friggin expensive...
