Clutch Chatter

Trying to get the truck all ready for my big trip and I have a couple of questions concerning my clutch. If I remember right the PO told me that he replaced the dual mass flywheel with a solid one piece, which after doing some searching around on the net sounds like it was a good thing. My questions are: When the truck is loaded heavy, like towing my trailer with the tractor when I need to back up the truck wants to hop. Also after I have been on the road for several hours it wants to hop in first gear as well even when not loaded. And one other thing, when shifting in the lower gears when you push the clutch in to shift it will clunk. This gets better as the truck gets warmed up. Are these issues due to the single mass flywheel or do I have something els in the drive line starting to wear. The clutch does not slip or smell, just not smooth. It clutches like a big truck rather than a PU

I too was waiting for responses since I have the same situation sometimes (chatter when backing up with a load).

Well if you don't have a Dual Mass Flywheel anymore, that's probably what's causing the noise. A Dual Mass Flywheel is two steel disks, that are held together by some heavy springs. The only reason for this is to eliminate gear clatter at RPMs of 1500 or less. The transmission is noisy if it were not for the DMF, but no harm actually comes from the sound. So nothing to worry about, it's all normal.

There are so many different clutch disc linings out there today it makes it very hard to guess what is going on.

Could be the fact that the clutch is some performance lining, grabs easy and don't slip.
Could be the fact the clutch disc has less dampening (spring) action than the dual mass
did.

Looks like both of you have extended cabs.
What shape is the carrier bearing in?
How about the transmission mount?
Any excess play in the universal joints?

Have you checked the yoke on the rear axle to make sure it is tight on the pinion shaft?
After many miles it is not uncommon for the yoke splines to wear which works the pinion nut loose.
That can cause excess play in the driveline.

I would also inspect the motor mounts, a couple times in the last week people have posted about the engine bracket breaking above the motor mount where it bolts to the block.

Firewall flex may not be fully engaging the clutch when you press the pedal down.
Have someone push the clutch to the floor while you watch the clutch master cylinder.
If it moves, your firewall may be cracked causing the flex.

My guess is it is a combination of several small things which are adding up, not one big thing.

How much back lash should there be on the drive line? If I grab the drive shaft I can turn it back and forth about an 1/8 of a rotation. I will check out the other things you mentioned tomorrow after work. Thanks.

1/8th turn sounds about right.

Just look at the pinion shaft and yoke while you are turning it and make sure you don't have a loose nut on the pinion or play in the splines.

U joints getting worn, a little play here added to a little play there and soon you have a bunch.
