No Power to Ignition

Alrighty, so I've got another curve ball. I have a 1990 F250 single cab Lariat. The other day when I went to start it, I got nothing when I switched the ignition forward. Didn't hear a click, no wait to start light, no radio, nothing... However, when I turn the ignition backwards, to the accessory position, I get radio and power.

I checked all of my the connections to my battery. In fact, I recently replaced all of the terminals.

Should I be looking at fuses, fuseable links, ignition switch, ...???

Ignition switch. Not the keyed part in the column, but the small electrical box on top of the column behind the instruments. The key switch has a rod that activates the electrical switch.

Ok. So, do you think the switch may be bad or the rod that would normally engage it?

More than likely the switch. They come apart after time. They're held together by bent tabs. Sometimes you can buy some time by re-bending the tabs to tighten it back up, but it will fall apart again.

Good news is they're under $15 to replace.

Well, come to find out one of the batteries were starting to fail. I switched them around and the truck fired right up. So, I guess I have to go buy a new one. One battery was purchased about a year ago by the PO.

So, your second battery isn't connected well enough.

Well, I don't think the connection was the issue. Both batteries were connected well. In fact, all of the connections were pretty new. However, the battery in question was old and way too small for the pickup. I believe it only had like 700 CCA. I just think it couldn't keep up.

These batteries are hooked up parallel and not isolated. It does not matter which side what battery is installed in, they both run the starter, at the same time.

So not only did you have a bad connection, but your batteries are mismatched which is not a good idea.

^^^^^ +1; stop farting around and go get TWO NEW batteries of 850 CCA (make sure that's COLD cranking amperes) or higher. One weak battery will weaken the other one. PO should have replaced both at the same time.
