I drive a 96 f350. But at work we have a 04 f350 bucket truck. Ive been having an issue lately, mainly when it is cold, but even some times when it is good and warm. When under acceleration it will either tend to "stall" or even not shift right. Trans fluid is fine. And today I noticed it bulching black smoke while "skipping" under acceleration. Could this be the torque converter going out? Or should I be looking for something else. I need to pin it down before taking it to the shop.
It is more likely to be the paint on the hood than the torque converter. I don't understand why everyone always added the torque converter.
You have an engine problem, not a torque converter or transmission problem.

Have it scanned for codes. Might even be as simple as a dirty EGR valve.
But you have to scan it first. At this point any thing is a guess other than
it's NOT THE TRANSMISSION.
