My brother called me last night because his truck wouldn't start (2001, 250, V10). Grab the jumper cables and head to his place. He shows me what it is doing an de quickly determine the compressor has locked. One guy kept telling us it was the battery. When the key was turned to start, it would begin to turn over, the fan would move about an inch and everything stopped. When he let go of the key the fan would go back. We pulled the belt and truck started no problem. So I went and got the flatbed trailer and brought it to my place.
Since the ac hasn't worked for about three years I swapped in the ac compressor bypass pulley. Takes about 20 minutes to install, uses the same belt and cost is $39.99 plus tax at AutoZone.
Not a bad deal to get back on the road for $40. Do you have plans on replacing the compressor at any point? I wouldn't want to be in Texas without air conditioning!
Tom- it's my brothers and he works outside at both of his jobs (last 30 years or so) and the heat doesn't bother him. Hasn't had a/c in it for a couple years now. If it was me I wouldn't be touching that truck without it.
As it sits now it will need new everything. I'm sure shavings from the compressor have contaminated every part in the system. Probably $1000 for parts alone.
