Vibration at take off only

Vibration at take off only

I've got a 97 that vibrates during take off and up to about 15mph or so. Happens every time and more noticeable when I'm towing my tractor.

Seems to be coming from the rear.

Checked the drive shaft and found the drive shaft support bushing to be a little cracked and the shaft has a small amount of play.

Could this cause this vibration?

Welcome to fte! Are you talking about the carrier bearing? It sounds like you are, and that could and would cause a vibration.

Thanks! I'm glad I found this site because I've got a lot to learn about my new truck!

On my truck, the rubber is cracked and the driveshaft has a small amount of play.

Yep, that's the carrier bearing. That one you pictured however says its for a 5.8L truck. I don't know off hand if there is a difference in carrier bearings between the two or not, but you should check before you get one.

Unless you have a gasser truck, then you are on the wrong part of the site if you do. Not a big deal.

Good catch, thanks for that as well!

I just input my truck info and assumed all they would list would be for my truck...not the case.

I'll start with replacing that and see what happens.

I've never replaced one of those carrier bearings. What does that entail? Easy at home repair?

When I did mine, after I had the driveshaft removed, I had to cut the old one off with a cutoff wheel.

The carrier bearing can be a PITA to change. While it's apart, it wouldn't be a bad idea to put a light coating of grease in the slip yoke behind the carrier bearing. My ex girlfriends truck bumped everytime you would take off from a stop and greasing the slip yoke fixed it.. My SD has this same vibration right now. I need to do the carrier bearing and grease the slip yoke soon.

Also check the transfer case mount. I just had my whole rearend done with carrier bearing and balenced drive shaft. At 15 mph there is a slight vibration. The drive line shop also made sure all my angles are right too. They said to replace the transfer case mount and see what that does.
