AC question

1991 ford f350 7.3

guy i got truck from had no belt on the AC compressor, i just put one on and the compressor just spins, the clutch i guess you would call it, never kicks on. will that not kick on if the system has no charge?

also , is the 91 a 134a system?

Thanks,
Dave

A 91 would be R12 still. The compressor clutch could either be shot or it is low on charge and not letting it kick in. Jump 12v volts to it and see if it kicks in. If it does it is low on freon. If not the clutch is shot.

Or just use a test light. Check for voltage at the low pressure switch. If you have it then jump the switch and check for voltage at the compressor connector. Once u verify voltage to it then plug it into the compressor breifly to see if the clutch engages. If it does then it is either low on freon of the low pressure switch is bad.
