AC Compressor

My air conditioning was working intermittently - full on OK or no cooling at all, and now has stopped. I looked at it over the weekend and found the compresser clutch was not engaging even though it was getting power. Can the clutch be serviced without getting into the compressor, i.e., the refrigerant side? Or do I just need a new compressor? ( 1994 F-150, 6 cyl, standard shift). Thanks.

The clutch could be broken or I think the system could be out of refrigerant. I think there's a sensor and when the pressure goes too low it will disconnect the clutch.

On the dryer? (long black tube) there will be a 2 **** plug in, you can cross it with a paper clip and it will over ride the low pressure switch, this will kick on the A/C clutch to test it.

If that doesn't work I believe you can order the clutch seperate.

You could also try adding some freon to bring the system pressure up. You may still have to short the LP switch to operate the compressor until enough freon in the system.

Thanks for the quick replies. I tried adding some freon - wouldn't take any - I don't have any gauges so don't know exactly what's going on. But I do get 12 volts at the compressor when I turn the AC on so I'm assuming all is OK with the cut-outs, etc.
