I wanna say that a 96 has a 3G already, but I could be wrong. You could upgrade the alternator. From a '96 7.3 diesel you can get that alternator and it is a direct bolt on with increased amp output.

My 96 currently has a 95 amp alternator but not sure if it is a 3G or not.
A 3G:
Has a bigger chunky case.
Has an INTERNAL fan, and lots of slots for airflow.
Has a stud-type of output connection.
A 2G burn-up style alt. (bad!)
Has a smaller case.
Has an EXTERNAL fan on the front, right behind the pulley.
Has relatively few slots.
Has the 3-terminal output connector (not talking about the regulator, this connector is through the case itself, and this connector to harness connection is where the fire starts).
Rockauto is your friend, can look up a 1996 to see 3G, look up a 1992 to see a 2G fire-starter alternator.
Denso MAY have been the original mfg. of the 3G, so I would trust them rebuilding one. And Motorcraft rebuild, probably pretty pricey. And probably Remy, with their electrical experience. For local autopart stores "store brands", it's probably a toss-up, or is that a crap-shoot? Dunno.
We replaced a "we put the fire out just in time " burning 2G with a rebuilt AutoZone 3G back maybe 2006 or so on a 302 car, but that's along time ago to give any reference on what would be in a local auto parts store today!
There are two types of 3G, 95 Amp and 110 Amp. 96 should be 95 amp.
Mid nineties e 350 clubwagon with high output alternator would be direct bolt on.
google 3g for different outputs.
