Check the icp voltage koeo. Check the ipr screen for damage. Did the glow plug light turn on after it died or just the oil and battery light?

Also try wiggling the wires going to cam sensor (it's on the drivers side behind power-steering pump). I have seen a rash of them going bad lately. If it will start by moving that wire around then try and keep moving it and see if it will die again. If it will then you need a new wire harness.

I had a 7.3 one time that did simular things, but also started hard sometimes. Turns out the Eot pigtail was having issues. It would loose connection and the Eot input went to like -140 deg and a split sec later it would read the norm. What the temp sensors close with live data and see if you see a jump.

Also try unplugging the icp sensor. It will go to a default value and see if the surging stops. Also look for oil inside the icp sensor connection.

The only accurate factory gauges are the speedometer and the door ajar light. The temp gauge will read normal between 170 and 220. Oil pressure just means you have more than 7 psi. If you have a smartphone get the torque app and a bluetooth obd2 adapter.

Good deal. Thanks for posting the solution. It's always nice to hear what fixed the problem. Most don't take the time to post solutions. Reps to you for that

I wonder if you didn't fix something else in the process?

Cleaning the turbo shouldn't have any effect on an engine that dies.
