No glow plug light?

Anyone ever run into this?
Had the truck plugged in overnight because it's been in the -25 range here all week...get in to start it this morning and the glow plug light can on for about 3 seconds, I thought this odd as it's usually longer but the truck started fine, went into fast idle etc....just like it should.

Drove my kid to school etc...engine was good and hot...stopped to get a coffee...shut truck down....get back in after...go to start it...no glow plug light, figured that was odd so cycle key again same thing...ok truck started fine as the engine is hot.

Drive home and let the truck cool off a bit....go to leave, glow plug light comes on for about 2 seconds, truck starts fine. Get back from my drive and cycle key just in spite, no glow plug light?!?

Any ideas? Yes I did check the GPCM fuses and they are fine....going to not plug it in tonight and see what happens but I'm a little concerned this thing isn't going to start....

Sounds normal to me. I wont even see mine sometimes when I start it after being plugged in. The 6.4 are fast.

Same with me I don't hardly even look for it anymore unlike my 7.3's.

Hummm interesting...we will see what happens in the morning...not as cold tonight as it has been but the truck will have sat for at least 15 hrs so it should be stone cold.

Maybe it wasn't working properly before and it is now...lol...who knows....

Wink

Ok update time: so went out to the truck this morning after not driving it or having it plugged in for over 15 hrs....hit the key, glow plug light comes on and goes out after about 10 second or so as I would expect it too...engine starts perfect. Drive truck for about an hour, good and warm, park it at the barn for a couple hours......come out, turn the key.....no glow plug light again....and no not a flash, or on then off nothing...nada, niet....I whatched carefully.

Something is either not correct now or something was not correct before Thursday because the glow plug light would always come on even just for a split second.....

Anyone know enough about these trucks to say " this component is tyed to that light so if this happens it's more then likely this". I would run it into the dealer but my buddy who is the deisel tech there already told me he hasn't got a clue so he's just going to throw some parts at it to start anyways...heck I can do that myself.....

when your engine is at a desired temp. ( i don't know what it is) the glow plugs only come on for a short period of time, you never noticed this in the summer? So when you have it plugged in and the engine is warm, it doesn't need it to start.

If it's warmed up mine doesn't come on at all, so far no problems.
I believe your truck is normal.
Coldest I've experienced is about 25*
Currently about 62*....sorry y'all, I'm in South TX

Yah I understand the theory behind what this system does and from what I'm reading here it sounds like my truck is working like all yours but then something has changed because over the last 6 months I've owned the truck every time I cycled the ignition the light has come on ....yes for varied time length....but always on at ignition key on. If it was 105 degrees here I might just say wtf who cares but it's been -35 here lately....

I guess worst case is it just won't start and I'll have to deal with it then....lol.

It sounds to me like its working fine, mine will even come on for a second or 2 if the truck is up to operating temp and I run into the store for a minute.

Really think your worried about nothing. My 6.0L hated the cold. My 6.4L doesn't seem to mind it at all. When Im plugged in I get the glow plug light for about a second. Miss it if Im not paying attention.

Agreed, it's been starting fine so until it doesn't ....lol. I'm also wondering if the winter grill cover is keeping heat in the rad/engine compartment.......
