Hi I recently purchased a 2000 7.3, when it's started cold it's lopes at start up unless I give it some gas and then it's perfectly fine. If the truck is plugged into the engine block heater it starts normal. I changed the oil the day after I bought it and put 15w-40 in it and then the rough idle started. So I don't know if it was like this before or because of the thicker oil I put into in the cold. It also has a service engine soon light on and the code that comes up when read is to the icp sensor. When looking st the sensor the blue wire going to it looks cut and is disconnected. How would I reconnect these wires and see if that makes the check engine light go off. Thanks
If its simply a broken/cut wire, I would solder it and use adhesive lined heat shrink over the joint to seal out the elements. If needed, you can also purchase a new pigtail and replace it.
The ICP sensor has possibly failed, and this might have been the OP's way around the problem - rather than simply pulling the plug.
Your glow plugs are likely not getting enough time to warm things up (assuming the system is fully functional). That Wait to Start is a reminder light, not a timer. You need to give the GPs a lot of time before cranking in really cold weather - it takes at least tens seconds before those things even glow. Depending on the temperature, they may be on for as long as two minutes - and cranking 5 seconds after energizing them with the key robs them of the opportunity to do their job.
15W-40 is the recommended oil for these trucks, but that was a long time ago. 5W-40 helps the HEUI injectors to fire when it's tongue-stick-to-flagpole cold outside, and it helps older injectors even more.
