I have never seen one, and had previously thought they were a marine application only.
I did some digging on summit and a few other places, and it looks like they used them on about everything from 68 to 77/78. I could be wrong because it is hard to look up if they used a solenoid or not, and I'm spitballing.
I'm looking at installing long tube headers on my 71 F250. It has a FE motor. From what I have been told the later years of the 460's have a mini starter on them. So I am looking at balancing a flex plat and changing the starter to the smaller starter. This will give me the ability to buy a replacement start over the counter vs. ordering one from on line store.
I know little about FE motors. Your theory sounds plausible, but it also sounds like a lot of work. Is there such thing as a mini replacement for FE blocks or an adapter for a mini?
Okay, spent a large part of the day looking thru old NAPA starter books. I found what I was told should work. It is a Nippondenso off set gear reduction starter. NAPA part number Ray 2440208. This is for a diesel and I’m going to guess it will not work. Or has anyone tried it on there gas burner?
I received a heat shield that goes around the outside of my starter which I was able to install with my banks headers that don't have a lot of clearance.
