I recently bought from Summit a Power Master XS Torque Starter model # PWM-9506 to replace the starter fried by my headers. It did not come close to fitting. I went to Napa and replaced core unit with one that would fit.
I own a '69 F250 with what appears to be a 360 possibly modified to 390.
Arent all starters for FE motors the same?
What would have been the right aftermarket choice?
My intent is to change out existing headers with ceramic coated Stan's Model 222Y so as to not fry new starter.
Not sure about the starter question, but when you do get one make sure you get a 'starter blanket' which wraps around the starter and helps keep it from getting fried.
Good choice on headers. I run Stans ceramic coated headers on mine, and even as hard as I run my engine I haven't had any heat soak problems with my starter, and thats without a blankie. I still use a stock starter too so you should be fine. I really can't say which aftermarket starter would be best though.
Hey rcbisset - I tried to different aftermarket starters for 390 FE in 67 truck with Dyno"Junk" ceramic coat headers, a Tilton (which I even had some addtl. machining on), and a CVR, and I could not make eith one fit. So I to bought a good NAPA unit (I'd had a NAPA on for cple yeaars with previous headers (even cheaper non coated ones) with no problem, but had fried several starters previous to that. I was/am convinced it was the headers, but figured I'd already invested too much to try another set just for a "cool" starter. However, the stupid dynojunk things wont seal so they are getting replaced with Sandersons, FF427, and I might get to use a better starter - I'll start with the Tilton. I agree that Ceramic Coating is way to go. Also footnote on the "Starter Blanket" I did have one on this last stock starter and it is all stiff and aluminized coating is flaking off, it's crap, and this with zero miles, justing starting and moving it around the shop.
