Hey guys. First of all the vehicle in question is a 71 f250 2wd AT with a 390.
I recently rebuilt the carburator and put in a new fuel filter. I also added in a clear inline filter just before the fuel filter that is on the carb.
I have done plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Points and condensor. And I converted it to manual choke. I think thats it.
But i started the truck this morning and it starts right up for me everytime now that I have done all that stuff and I pulled it out of the garage into my sloped driveway. The truck was facing downhill and it ran for a little bit and then died. I tried to start it and it would just crank. I tried using starting fluid and i couldnt get it to start. I ended up pushing it down to the street onto a level surface and I let it sit for about 10 mintues. It started up after being on level ground.
Any idea why it would do this? I did notice while the truck was parked downhill, that new clear inline fuel filter I added was completely filled with fuel but when I got it back on level ground and got it running I could see while the fuel was running through it, it was only like a 1/16th of the way full.
Is it a 2BBL or 4BBL? It does sound like it flooded out, but a 2BBL shouldn't flood facing downhill. A 4BBL has a float bowl on either end, so if the rear level is too high, it'll potentially drain down the carb throat and flood the engine.
How steep of a drive is it?
Is the problem strictly downhill or is that just when you 1st noticed it? Another FTE'r had a problem sounds close to yours. His was a bad new condensor. And you mentioned you just changed it. Buy a good quality one and see if that fixes it.
