shouldn't fuel filter fill up?

I have one of those clear fuel filters with the replaceable element on my 79 Bronco. When this engine was in my truck, I thought the fuel filter used to fill up while the truck was running. Now it just burbles a little fuel in every now and then and only pools in the bottom, maybe 1/8-1/4". (it sits at an angle)

One reason I ask is because the other day, I stopped at a friends house for a couple minutes, left the truck running, and when I got about 1/4-1/2 mile down the road, it was trying t die, like it wasn't getting enough fuel. I was able to feather the throttle and get it going. Then it did it again when I stopped at a stop sign and went again. It did it right after shifting (automatic) into 3rd.

Then yesterday, after sitting for 5 or 6 days, it wouldn't start. Last night after work, I had to pour gas down the carb to get it to start.

I'm thinking my fuel pump is bad and not keeping the carb full.

Oh, the other day, after the hesitation thing, I could go WOT from 40-70 (didn't want to go too far above the 60 mph limit) with no problem. So that makes me think maybe it isn't the fuel pump.

could be several thing. Fuel pump, crack fuel line, clogged fuel line.I would start at the filter and track it backwards to see if i could find something.

Yes it could be a number of things either before or after the fuel pump. The best course of action would be to perform a fuel pump test. With any luck it is just a plugged filter. As all ready suggested the easiest and cheapest approch if you do not perform a pump test is to change out the filter.

Yes, I have replacement elements, so that WOULD be the easiest/cheapest route, although the filter doesn't look dirty. I also have a spare pump, so I can put that on.

I thought the filter going empty was odd, but in my searches, it seems it's not so unusual. So although I MAY have a pump going bad or clogged filter or sock, I no longer thing that it is why the fuel filter is empty.

I DO think that the carb isn't getting full, so when it sat for a few days, the little bit of fuel in the carb dried up. This would also explain the apparent temporary fuel starvation after idling. Might not be pumping enough at idle to keep the carb full, allowing it to temporarily starve after acceleration.

ALSO....maybe this contributes to the hiccup and stutter between 1 and 3 miles of cold-start driving. (I posted a good while back about that. On a cold start, it runs fine, but if I stop in the period of 1-3 miles, I get a hiccup/stutter on acceleration. It's fine before and after the 1-3 miles.)

i was suggesting a cracked fuel line which would cause a drop in fuel pressure.not enough pressure, not enough fule throughout sytem after the crack

My 63 F100 has always done this. Replaced the tank, all rubber lines, fuel pump new when I installed the 351W. It partially fills when cold, but stays almost empty when warmed up. I haven't driven it enough to know if it will starve for fuel. Does it with the gas cap off too, so it's not a venting issue.

I pulled the fuel line off the filter and put it in a bottle. Cranked the engine for 10-15 seconds and got about a half a spurt of fuel at first, then nothing.

I put a new pump on it, drove it a few miles, then stopped at a light for plenty long enough to reenact the problem. I only did it once, but the problem didn't happen. Next week, I'll know better after driving back and forth to work a few times if the problem is gone.
