I have an 84 F150 with the 302 V8 in it. I love this truck but I have a question on the carb. When I depress the gas pedal quickly (like to gun it) it feels like I hit a flat spot in the carb, and the engine immediately dies.
BUT, if I depress the accelerator slowly then I get great power with NO dead spot. This happens anytime whether it's warm or cold and at any speed. Meaning I can be doing 35 and depress the accelerator quickly and the engine will either sputter or die.
I was thinking of replacing the fuel filter in the carb as a start. Someone noted spark plugs, rotor and cap could cause this. The engine does not backfire though. Any light you can shed would be great.
That sounds like a fuel problem to me. I would change the fuel filter, check the fuel lines for cracks etc.... and make sure your getting good fuel pressure.
Try a carb kit. This is the accelerator pumps main function. When you stomp on the pedal it injects extra fuel into the intake to goose the engine. If the pump isn't working properly your engine will lag. It could be that ports are clogged as well, the screw in filter will bypass if it gets dirty enough and allow lots of crud into the carb.
There is a slight possibility that the float isn't allowing the bowl to fill with fuel so there isn't enough fuel to accellerate but this is unlikely.
The fuel delivery system before the carb, like filters and pump are less likely as well. The float bowl should have enough fuel in it already to allow accelleration without lagging. Signs of a clogged filter would be idling fine but when driving at a couple thousand RPM it would sputter and die for no apparent reason, start again and it idles fine again (sometimes won't start again)
Thanks for all of your ideas but it was nothing more than the carb filter. I replaced that and the dead spot was gone. Will now start on the valve cover gaskets and then it's time for the thing to get me from a to b for awhile.

The fuel filter would be good to check but I would have a fuel leak if the lines were cracked don't cha think?
