An over-current situation has caused your switch issue---I've had the same thing happen but not to that extent.
In my case the blower motor itself was fine however the switch and its wiring harness connector had both nearly melted---I was shocked they could even be separated. A new switch and repair pigtail spliced in and nary a problem with it some 4-5 years later.
